WEG supplied a 400 HP steam turbine to ArcelorMittal, one of the largest steel producers in the Americas, with operations in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, Mexico. The supply, carried out directly by WEG, marks a strategic milestone: it is the company’s first steam turbine project for the steel industry in Mexico, a sector traditionally associated with industrial motors and gearboxes.
Featuring impulse technology and back-pressure operation, the single-stage TS 1000 A turbine is ideal for applications requiring high reliability and energy efficiency. Designed to operate with steam up to 45 bar and 450 °C, the turbine converts thermal energy into mechanical energy with high performance and can even drive small generators for electricity production.
In this project, the turbine will be used to generate clean electricity, powering the unit’s internal processes and thus contributing to the client’s environmental and efficiency goals. With an availability rate close to 99%, the equipment provides robustness and operational continuity in intensive industrial applications.
The supply reaffirms WEG’s commitment to providing innovative solutions that support its customers’ sustainability objectives. By integrating a high-efficiency turbine into its energy matrix, the Mexican plant takes another step towards lower-carbon operations, reducing grid energy consumption and consolidating its position as a global leader in low-impact steel production.
For WEG, this project strengthens the company’s presence in the Latin American steel market with solutions that go beyond industrial motors, opening new opportunities for turbomachinery in energy generation for the sector. The successful delivery of the turbine also reinforces ArcelorMittal’s trust, with whom WEG already has extensive experience in supplying motors and gearboxes.
